I'm a member of the guild, and I can say for sure that they've got an amazing shop space, with plenty of tools to make my job easy. It's a little difficult to get in, but if you want to do serious woodworking, it's well worth it.

As a Furniture Maker in Oregon it's a Great resource and support group for information, workshops and advertising for what it's members are capable of.

Guess I am going to be that one person who has a complaint. I got jerked around and it was a waste of time. We are working on a woodworking project; of which there is a single step for which we do not have the proper equipment. Wanting to keep our fingers attached, I started calling around town inquiring for someplace to whom I could take the lumber and pay to perform that specific task. When I got down the call list to the GoOW I spoke with a volunteer (Tim) about the project and the step for which I required equipment/assistance. I described the project step in detail including the possible pitfalls as I saw them. He assured me that they had the equipment, that he could handle it, that it would take about an hour (+/-), and BONUS that he would do it at no cost if he could talk up a membership. He gave me a specific day and time that I could come in and get assistance from him personally. All plusses right... I should have known better. Well, fast forward to 3 days later. I have scheduled some friends to help with the remaining assembly later in the week. So, I prep the materials, load them in the truck, and drive 20 minutes to go in as arranged. Turns out that, no, they do not have adequate equipment; and, no, Tim doesn't think they can handle it. Frankly, that should have been more than clear based on the description of my project needs. Tim had some sparse memory of our conversation; and took no accountability for either failing to ask more questions or just outright giving inaccurate information. So, I am left where I started - which isn't the end of the world; but is it infuriating. Tim is a volunteer, so social contract dictates I should just eat crow, reschedule the project, and get back to calling around town. So my first and last impression? While they may be fine for most personal projects, my guess is if you become a member you should expect to just work it out yourself.

Questions & Answers

I want to build a large live edge dinner table. I need to have my planks planned down and level. How do I find someone near me that can do that?

You should be able to visit the Guild website and post a job to the community.

Greetings. I am just getting started in woodworking. I am uncertain about when to use green wood and when the wood must be dry. I have logs from the ice storm that need to be cut; do it now, or wait? What about planing? Many thanks!

You cannot use green wood for anything more than firewood. As it dries, wood twists and racks - meaning anything you build from it will come apart after it's built.

Hello I have an older Adirondack style chair that needs some new parts cut, I have the old pieces and it would be pretty easy to trace and cut them but I don't have the place, wood or tools to do it. Would someone in your group like this small job?

You need to contact the guild through their website and they will include your request in a weekly e-mail that goes out to the entire membership.
