There was a Private James McKenzie in Company F, 15th New Jersey Infantry who was mortally wounded at Cedar Creek 10/19/1864. There was also a Sergeant John McKenney/McKinney/McKinny/McKenny in Company D, 4th New Jersey but he survived and was discharged in July 1865. The John McKenney at Winchester would have been born in the 1830s or 1840s.
Winchester National Cemetery is closed to new burials. The closest open national veterans cemetery with available burial space is Culpeper National Cemetery; however, gravesites are assigned at the time of need. VA-operated national cemeteries do not reserve grave sites. Both Veterans and their eligible dependent may be buried at a national cemetery. Eligible dependents are: veteran's spouse, children under age 18, or adult dependent children with mental or physical disabilities that manifested prior to their 18th birthday.
Wreaths less than 18 inches in diameter and no taller than the headstone may be placed on the gravesite from December 1st through January 20th.
