I work in long term care. Sending one of my residents out to the hospital is always a difficult decision but knowing that they are going to Assurance makes the decision easier.

This Assurance location is a 'senior inpatient psychiatric care' facility aka mental institution featuring 28 beds and is only for patients 60 years and over with anxiety, depression, psychosis, behavior disturbances, Alzheimer's, dementia and, last but not least, mental disorders related to brain injury, stroke, or other neuropsychiatric disorders. For those of you in healthcare, if you are wondering what this place does, you are not the only one. There are 2 ways to control a patient: chemical and physical. I could hear the pride in the employee's voice when she informed me that my friend (Sara) had her meds reduced (she was an inpatient with dementia). She was on 'a lot of psych meds' which is odd since I had her med list but then again, my definition of 'a lot' may be different than Nurse Ratchett's. But let's move on... Three days later, 'Sara' is so doped up for a 15-minute chaperoned visit, she can't speak a full sentence. That prideful voice from earlier was strangely swapped out for silence. She was in somebody else's clothes. What happened to hers? Let's pray they aren't on Randle McMurphy. I personally don't believe there is a cure for dementia so I don't understand what the purpose of this hell hole is (other than to make money.) Any nursing home can change and reduce meds. Any nursing home can drug patients.. I know that because I work in one. The administrator doesn't have voice mail "set up yet' (can't blame him/her), social services only has one phone for the two and Nurse Ratchett isn't real big on hydration. Want a glass of ice water? Bribery works wonders. Social Services does not believe in care conferences and I don't blame them. A stay can be between 14 days and two months and consists of 'specialized care'. In light of the subject matter, how does one 'improve enough' to graduate? No one seems to know. I asked my healthcare coworkers what THEY thought and we agree that graduation occurs when another customer's head pops up or the insurance runs out. So when one graduates, what happens? Nothing. Whatever medication they were taking before is added again. I know this as I have the med lists before AND after. What was the point of this stay? Nothing. To be fair, people who like to control others seem to enjoy working here. They need a place to legally exert control over others when State isn't looking. Pictures cannot be attached because you aren't allowed outside the visiting area. Landscaping looks nice though. Do you ever wonder what happens to the medications, narcotics, etc. when the patient returns to their facility and becomes the person they were BEFORE this spa stay? Guess.

As a professional in a NKY Assisted Living I often recommend Assurance Health to families needing their services. Behavioral healthcare, especially for seniors living with Dementia or Alzheimer’s, can make such a difference in their level of care & quality of life. I am grateful for all Assurance Health does for our residents & their families.

Our services are for the geriatric population. Please reach out to Blueridge Vista, Sun Behavioral or Glenwood Behavioral Hospital for inpatient information. If you feel that you are in a self harm or dangerous situation, please reach out to your local law enforcement or first responders.

Would you do a short term psych evaluation (3 days) on a 42 yr old if one of your psych Dr. recommened her to go there ?
