I was questioning why I had agreed to get a cleaning on Halloween evening. But as I walked in, there was all the staff dressed up in "zoo" costumes. (Except my technician was a bee. hmmm). Anyway, it brightened my time with this friendly group of people! And no cavities... for now.

Questions & Answers

WHEN SHOULD I CHANGE MY TOOTHBRUSH?

Your toothbrush will eventually wear out, especially if you are brushing your teeth twice a day for two to three minutes each time. Your dentist recommends that adults and children change their toothbrush every three months. If you are using an electric toothbrush, be sure to read the directions because you may not need to change toothbrush heads as frequently. Patients with gum disease are encouraged to change their toothbrush every four to six weeks to keep any bacteria from spreading. After brushing, rinse your toothbrush with hot water to kill germs and keep the bristles clean. If you’ve been sick, be sure to change your toothbrush as soon as possible.

WHAT IS A CAVITY?

A cavity is a small hole that forms inside the tooth because of tooth decay. Cavities are formed when plaque buildup on the outside of the tooth combines with sugars and starches in the food you eat. This produces an acid that can eat away the enamel on your tooth. If a cavity is left untreated, it can lead to more serious oral health problems. Cavities can be prevented by remembering to brush your teeth at least two times a day and floss between teeth at least once.

SHOULD I USE A MANUAL OR ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH?

There are many arguments for each type of brush but the truth is, it’s more a matter of personal preference. Electric toothbrushes offer some advantages in convenience but with proper technique, you can keep your teeth strong and healthy using either a powered or a manual toothbrush. The most important thing is to brush teeth twice a day and floss daily, using good technique for strong oral hygiene.

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD START SEEING THE DENTIST?

Your child’s first appointment at our office should take place around his or her first birthday. We won’t usually perform any treatments during this appointment; it’s more a chance for us to get acquainted, to help your child start adjusting to the routine of seeing a dentist, and so we can make sure their teeth are developing as normal. After this first visit, we’ll need to schedule regular checkups and examinations once or twice every year.

DO YOU TAKE MY INSURANCE?

Give us a call! We accept most insurance plans, and we do everything we can to help each patient make the most of their dental insurance benefits. We understand that insurance policies are complex and often extremely difficult to understand, so you may not fully understand the extent of your coverage—and that’s ok. While not all treatments are covered, we provide full insurance assistance, helping you understand your policy in depth. We’ll even complete and submit your dental insurance forms to help you get the biggest reimbursement possible. While not all patients are covered by dental insurance, we strive to help you get the maximum coverage you’re entitled to. That said, dental insurance companies seek to reduce costs more than they seek to provide for proper dental care. Accordingly, they usually cover only basic dental services and exclude a variety of treatments.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I SEE A DENTIST?

The American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines recommend visiting a dentist at least twice a year for a check-up and professional cleaning. Our office also recommends a minimum of two visits per year.
