The simplest route is through a local pubic library. Ask your closest library for an "Info Pass" to use research holdings at the University of Chicago. You will not be able to borrow books directly from the University of Chicago Library, but you can request items you have found while researching in the collections through interlibrary loan from your local library, an arrangement that is especially easy given Chicago's generous interlibrary loan policies.
It's actually for University affiliated people however passes can be acquired during business hrs for non-university people. Technically it is not a public library.
