When was the island for the prison first discovered?
Sam Fleshler | Nov 3, 2018
Jennifer Wells | Nov 3, 2018
The name Alcatraz is derived from the Spanish "Alcatraces." In 1775, the Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala was the first to sail into what is now known as San Francisco Bay - his expedition mapped the bay and named one of the three islands Alcatraces. Over the years, the Spanish version "Alcatraz" became popular and is now widely used.
Be advised, Wikipedia also lists the founders name as Juan Manuel Diaz. Not sure on his actual name.
