If the gas is leaking out of the middle of the top of the gas cap it sounds like your air vent in the gas cap is not operating properly. Some gas caps actually have a baffle or a cork liner to keep the gas in the tank, but also to let air in so you do not get vapor lock. If your new gas cap worked properly for awhile, I would check the inside of your gas cap and look for the problem.
