No sorry. We do not buy damaged equipment from the public. In the future you should avoid Microsoft Surface products. Only in the most recent model has Microsoft designed it to be repairable. While we have been able to perform repairs when Microsoft clearly states on their website that they were not repairable, we found continuing that service to be not worth it, kind of like chewing glass. Even the newer models that Microsoft claims are somewhat repairable, other professionals in the repair community have said it's still very challenging and high risk low reward. We would be happy to talk to you about replacements. We've seen the insides of thousands and thousands of laptops so we do have an opinionated stance on what models are built well and others and their common and frequent problems, costs and availability of repair parts, etc.... Without seeing the computer we can't give you much advice about a motherboard replacement. However, if the problem has to do with the graphics (grey screen, strange artifacts, after booting) the problem most likely has to do with the GPU. And the problem with 2011's is that ALL the GPU's manufactured have a defect. Apple had a recall some years ago for this problem, but it's no longer available. The fix for the graphics issue includes reprogramming the boot loader to use the integrated intel GPU instead of switching to the more powerfull but defective GPU, then shutting it off, taking it apart, and desoldering a resistor that supplies power to the failed GPU's circuit in order for the fix to remain permanent. The graphics wouldn't be as good, and the external output will no longer work, but the computer may be useable for day to day work. This is a very common Macbook 2011 problem. We do not repair broken printers because the cost of parts and labor exceed the cost of getting a new one. If the printer is worth more than a few hundred dollars used it might make sense to hire us to evaluate parts availability and repair options.

HI Kevin, depending on the laptop, it may be possible to perform updates to the operating system or even change it altogether, increase RAM, and switch out a slow hard drive for a fast SSD. We offer hard drive cloning if that is the appropriate solution. Additionally some laptops like the ones we sell allow for upgrading the cpu, upgrading the LCD, and upgrading the bios with open source coreboot bios.
We keep a small inventory of used high quality off lease grade A corporate laptops, desktops and servers for home or business. We can order and customize as well. Please make an appointment since we are not a walk in retail space we configure each computer to custom requirements. We are experts in Linux and open source software so we can make recommendations for cost saving measures that allow us to sell better hardware for a lower overall price if a customer is open to an alternative to Windows. Please note we are now no longer able to support Windows 7 or XP unless it is a very specialized use case.

Our store inventory is small but we can help guide you to an informed decision and offer a curated list from vendors we trust and advise you on an insurance/warranty plan. Since we aren't beholden to any phone maker we like to find the right option for you at an affordable price, earn your fandom, and not oversell you on a fancy smartphone (unless of course you want top of the line money is no option...in which case we would tell you to skip South City Computer and just go blow all your money at Apple ;).
