First, I have two words for you: Double Cheeseburger. There are basically four kinds of burgers in the world, and they all have their place in my heart. There's the restaurant burger (big and high-quality, though sometimes too fussy, and trying too hard to be 'special'); the diner / coffee shop burger (heaven for a serious meal with all the fixins); the fast-food burger (when that's what you want, it's all that will do). Then there's the fourth kind, the burger one can only find at local spots in smaller cities and towns across the United States, and that's the variant offered at John's: the classic drive-in burger. The sear on the two high-quality patties, the size, the toppings, the bun, the cheese (melted directly on both burgers!), the proportions, and the general vibe of the place in which it's served all add up to a sublimely satisfying only-in-America experience. Not too big, not too small, and not aiming for anything other than a good, solid flavor, this unassuming burger hits the mark for me every time. Every time. But as their name makes clear, at John's, the ice cream is the real star. It's truly delicious, and in addition to traditional favorites (like an AMAZING Black Cherry), John's also offers an ever-changing variety of interesting, homemade flavors. On my last few visits, I found the Toasted Coconut, Banana-Oreo, and Peanut Butter Blast flavors (amomg others) to all be excellent, and a cup of their FlufferNutter ice cream absolutely knocked my socks off. HOW HAVE I LIVED FOR 60 YEARS WITHOUT THIS FLAVOR?? Seriously good, it tastes like a perfect version of its namesake - minus the white bread. Open late and year-round, John's is a great choice for a family sit-down, a snack stop, or a quick grab-and-go. It's also the perfect place for a post-game respite after a round of miniature golf at Puff 'n' Putt, which is a few yards down the road. There's also outdoor seating, further adding to the delightful throwback atmosphere. In an era when places often strive for a 'retro' feel, John's is the real deal; it's old-school, but not outdated. It feels like walking back a few decades in time, and in the best possible way. I've been going to John's Ice Cream for over three decades now, and I hope to visit for a few decades more!
