The Best!

This place used to be one of the best in South Jersey for huge trees. Sadly they seem to have planted too few trees years ago and essentially all of the big trees are gone. We will have to look for a new place next year. Update: Stimpson's opened up a remote site this year with lots of big trees. The prices went up a bit, but they are still reasonable. We finished decorating our Stimpson's tree yesterday.

I decided to try Stimpson's for the first time this year since they were a bit closer than where I usually go. We were a bit confused upon arrival when we only saw trees in the 10-15' range. The staff explained to us that they had just purchased the property which had been left unused for quite a while and they were going to clear out all the trees and plant some other crops there afterward. They were 'topping' the larger trees and selling the tops as smaller trees. The problem with this is that the the tops often don't have a solid trunk and are basically a jumble of branches and double trunks. One of the staff members told us that they had had some complaints about these 'trunks' splitting apart. That's exactly what happened when I brought the tree home to put in the stand. It was a double trunk right above where they topped the big tree and it split right in half down the middle lengthwise. I sent them a message to ask about bringing it back and they were very understanding. Unfortunately it rained the next few days and then snowed and I was unable to bring it back immediately. I called them to confirm the exchange and was first told not to worry about bringing it back and to just come there and they would replace it. They then called me back and told me I needed to bring the old one. (I guess they suspected I was running a Christmas tree theft ring.) The split in half tree was now covered in snow and ice in my yard- not worth the hassle. I plan to throw it away and call the $55 + $10 tip a loss. There's a good chance that I would have the same issue with the replacement tree. I'll return to the place that I had gone to for years. Two stars only because the staff that handled the tree at the farm was friendly and polite. If only the trees were good quality.
