Great question! Many people want to improve their smile, but are afraid that braces will be too uncomfortable. Every person is different, but placing the braces is usually painless as the orthodontist glues the braces to the front of the tooth. The first few days after your braces are placed or after the braces are "tightened" can be a little sore, but it typically only lasts for a few days and is manageable. OTC analgesics like Tylenol can be helpful to make the experience more comfortable. Your teeth will continue to move even after the soreness wears off as the braces gradually move the teeth into the ideal positions. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that in order to prevent dental problems, your child should see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first check-up with an orthodontist no later than age 7. By that age, a child will have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, and the orthodontist will be able to recognize orthodontic problems (“malocclusions”) even in their earliest stages. If your child is younger than 7, and you notice something that appears “off,” it’s not necessary to wait until your child turns 7 or get a recommendation from your dentist to get a first check-up.
