Today, I am writing to you about one of the few good memories I had as a child. I lived across the street from Engine 43, Ladder 59 I have become a writer in my adult years and feel compelled to give a short simple testimony. I grew up without any male paternal figures in my life. The only ideal heartwarming men i had the opportunity to engage with were the firefighters at this firehouse. Whenever I felt lonely or was by myself, I would simply visit the firehouse. Everyone was always so welcoming and warm, took time to speak with me and allowed me to explore the office desk, sit in the cab of the fire trucks, ask questions and climb the brass pole, and generally just enjoy everyone's company. I doubt that free range is allowed these days, but that's one of the small events of my early life that made it all the more meaningful. Once in the early evening while there was still sunlight out, my brother, sister and i went down the steps to the park. Halfway down, we heard the Parkee calling for help. Some kids thought it would be recreationally funny to lock the poor man inside of the small maintence and restroom building. Naturally, my sister and brother and I without skipping a heartbeat knew who we would seek out for help. We ran up the stairs and without hesitation the firefighters on duty grabbed their equipment to rescue the man. Never in our minds did we doubt either the dedication or efficiency of the firefighters to perform a rescue. I have maintained a faith in humanity because of Ladder 59 and Engine 43. These events have left an indelible memory in my heart, and I am certain that this devotion to serve the community has remained a strong tradition. My Thanks have been a long time coming and I know the firefighters from the 60's have long since retired. Nonetheless, deep appreciation is in order, so I am passing it on to all of you currently serving. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for planting a grand inspiration in my life. Godd Bless you all, with fond memories. Carla Mahnken Woolf
