I cannot believe I have never been to T&P until my book club met there. First of all, you need to understand that anyplace that is in an architecturally historic building (whether it is an officially recognized historic location or not) AND maintains all of the original architectural structure, trim, decor, and furnishings, is already going to get a higher number of review stars from me. This places nails that "historic" star as they are located in the original diner in the historic T&P Train Station and the furnishing and decor looks like it might have looked in the 30s/40s. But to get 5 stars they have to nail it all and this place does. First of all, full bar and they could make me an espresso martini. Pretty sure that might not have been available in the 30s/40s. I think it was called Night Car. All their cocktails have awesome train names! And prices were on par with any other downtown bar. Second, the food was generous and tasty. You order at the counter and they will bring it to you. No table service. Don't expect a wide variety of choices on the menu. Normally this would cause a loss of one of the food stars I might award, but they have tailored their menu to replicate the kind of food you might have found in the 40s as you grabbed a bite between trains or to take with you in the train. Therefore, it's mostly sandwiches and appetizers, and the menu, in the historic context, is perfect so no stars lost there. I had the chicken salad on croissant and fries. Much more than I could eat, but the croissant was fresh and soft, and the chicken salad chunky, fresh, and tasty. The fries were they way I like them, crisp outside and soft inside, though as they cooled they did get a bit limp. But I was talking a lot as we held our book club discussion, so I was eating really slowly. One of the club members ordered the nachos, an appetizer, but this thing was huge!! Definitely designed for sharing by an entire table or a large meal for one. She forgot to say no jalapeno and pulled off what looked like a 1/4 cup of peppers, so if you like them you will have plenty! Patio!! Well, it's completely under cover because of the way the building is built, and feels kind of like being in a basement even though you are not. So, in some ways you don't feel like you are on a patio. But you can't miss the fresh air and temperatures of the day. Our weather that day was perfect, so I thought the patio was always like that. However, club members assured me you would feel the heat in the summer despite the giant fan above my head. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable patio even if I couldn't see anything of the outside (no plants, only a small patch of sky). And last but not least, it was not crowded at all. We met at 6:30 pm on a Wednesday, and there were so few people it felt like a hidden gem! Of course, it may not be that way on the weekends or if the tvs are showing a football game, but that night it was perfect!! As we sat there on the patio, the diner area did fill, so it's not like they don't have patrons. I realized the comfortable feel was because they didn't overstuff the dining area with tables, so you can move through the space easily and the noise level of the patrons is not overwhelming. That may be in part because of the really high ceilings. So go! You'll love it!! Be sure to save time in the schedule to see the rest of the architecture in the other public areas of the old station.
