Indiana Backyard Gardener
My experience with them is hardly an experience. I had high hopes that they would be able to help my sister and her two small children. Only for her to be turned away. Told that there is a waitlist....and she has to have a porter county address, she is HOMELESS. She has no address. Like I said, had high hopes only to be let down in a real time of desperation. The website should mention a waitlist if that is how they operate. Emergency shelter is just that....EMERGENCY. Disappointed.

As close to feeling "at home" that you'll get if you're in a bad position and homeless. They do everything they can to ensure safety and get you to important appointments when you lack your own transportation. Truly a relief and the best "shelter" around. (I hate using that term to describe this place because it doesn't feel like a typical shelter versus The Caring Place & St. Jude house!)

First of all, thank you so much for thinking about us! Gabriel's Horn asks that in lieu of donating clothing items, blankets, etc... that you donate those particular items to the Portage Resale Shop on Evergreen Rd in Portage. Whenever the women of Gabriel's Horn needs clothing or similar items she gets a voucher to shop there for free and get whatever she needs.
No, they do not , but encourage clothing donations be made to the Portage Resale Shop on Evergreen . The women receive vouchers to purchase from there. The shelter does not have space to directly store clothing donations.
Thank you so much for your inquiries... We alll that all baby items and clothing items be taken to the Portage resale shop on Evergreen ave. Our women can get a free voucher to shop there for clothing or baby items whenever they like. I want to thank each and everyone of you for thinking about us!
No just women and children
Yes we do if they are new
At this time, you must be from Porter County
You can call the number on the web site to volunteer. It's a wonderful place i was there for 6 months several yrs back.
Yes they do
No they dont just and women and kids only
There are no men at Gabriel's Horn. If he is homeless try New Creation Men's Center on Calumet in Valpo.
You don't have to leave, you have your own room and a key to your bedroom door. Staff will help you to transition into your own place. The place isn't a big place but it's safe and very clean.
