The security guards downstairs treated my husband and I very condescendingly when we came for our green card interview and made us almost miss it, even though I had been waiting outside the building for 20 min before the interview. Our interviewer was very kind and waited for us thankfully. But security seems to have no idea that it’s important to get people through quickly. I tried to go through the door with our infant son while on the phone with my husband who was on the way, but was stopped and told I needed our papers/no phones allowed in the building. I told my husband that and waited but the guard got mad that I didn’t physically turn the stroller around and go out the door (he didn’t make it clear that was the expectation), and then told me that I can “leave my attitude at the door” as if I was a child. He escalated the situation very quickly and I genuinely worried that if I wasn’t ultra compliant and polite he wouldn’t let me in at all. No shock ICE is in the same building- these guys apparently love making immigrant families feel fear. I went outside to wait for my husband who I had told I would be waiting inside, but because they forced us both to hang up he ended up going through a different entrance. USCIS does not tell you before an interview that you shouldn’t have pocket knives etc, and he had one, so they made him go across the street to put it in a planter. That’s when he finally found me outside, and we tried to go through security again. This time they took their sweet time going through every single pocket of my diaper bag, fully aware that we were now late for our interview. All the time the security guard was lecturing my husband about how we shouldn’t have brought so many things (he just had his backpack from work and I had basic things for our baby). Thank God our interviewer waited fifteen minutes for us. He said he came out several times and nearly canceled it.

From the moment you walk in to the way you are treated. Very unpleasant indeed. Security to staff. But you will pay their fees and you will accept whatever you decide. This is Amurica.

I'm whom Harper's Bazaar story is about and how they tell it in half truths. I don't look anything like this.
