So I have been a customer of this establishment for over 10 years and I really love(D) the food BUT there was a recent change to the RICE and its turned me off to eating there now. Not sure the reason, but its drastic enough to make me not like the food anymore. I spoke to one of the regular workers in this location and he said he thinks its a permanent change. I had left a five star review, which will now be a three star because of this and another recipe change they did last year that also ruined the quality of the food I think? I know this may seem a little petty, but it REALLY makes a difference. I don’t know why they changed the rice, but I seriously hope they switch back to the old kind. I wish they would stop messing with the recipe and the way they previously made the food. Leave good enough alone PLEASE. Otherwise, the service is always excellent and its was my favorite place to eat, prior to the change. Hopefully they find a new supplier soon.

Desolate vibes. But I cannot stop funneling this gorilla paste down my gullet, I'll tell you.

For those of you who used to eat at this location back in the day as a must eat near Times Square and Jacob Javits Center after a night out or conventions, this is no longer the same taste, quality, nor experience. The curry is no longer extremely flavorful and thick, the chicken Katsu is no longer lightly crunchy and moist, and the rice is no longer cooked to the perfect level of al dente. In fact, the curry there is water down and bland in comparison, the chicken Katsu is thinly cut, stale crunchy, and a bit dry, and the rice is slightly overcooked to the point where it is sticking together in clumps and you can see how overcooked the rice is by looking at each grain. It is extremely sad for me too write this review, because it truly was a gem in the midst of many mediocre competitors located in a very unlikely, but convenient, location.

Questions & Answers

Are there any gluten free options available? Thanks.

Hi Deep, unfortunately all of our curry sauces contain gluten, in addition to all of our breaded toppings. The only option we would have is our premium white rice & cabbage (without curry sauce) with some of our non-breading toppings, like sausage, or veggie toppings, like Japanese pickles. We also have a gyudon dish which would work!

What are the Covid safety practices like here?

Thank you for the inquiry! For customers, we sanitize all surfaces frequently, require masks to be worn at all times, have a plexiglass partition in front of the counter, and enforce all capacity restrictions. We require the employees to be temperature screened at the start of every shift, and they must of course wear masks at all times, in addition to glove use. Also, we have contactless pick-up available at least 6' from the cashier, in addition to offering curbside pickup. Hope this helps!

I've had japanese curry in japan. And also have japanese friend who make this. Why is the city sauce so dark? Real japanese curry is a golden amber color.

Hi Saskya! Our curry sauce is a particular regional type of Japanese curry from Kanazawa, Japan, Northwest of Tokyo. It's always a darker color, served on a metal plate, with shredded cabbage on the side-- unlike more "traditional" Japanese curries. The reason for the color is 1. It's marinated for 55 hours, which darkens it, and 2. It uses pork which lends it a darker color as well.
