I tried cryotherapy for the first time this weekend as it alleviated so much of the chronic pain that I've been having related to autoimmune as well as anxiety issues. At first, I was nervous about the idea, but after realizing the risks are very minimal when it's done right, I decided to give it a chance and I'm so pleased. I'm looking forward to seeing what becomes of this as I continue. Many thanks to Crystal for talking to me during my treatment and being super pleasant.

Questions & Answers

How does cryotherapy help with losing weight?

WBC “tricks” your body into implementing the same responses it would if you were freezing without the discomfort. Your body works much harder than normal in order to heat your body up. Consequently, it’s been reported that 500-800 calories are burned as a result of each session. When the body senses cold the brain releases norepinephrine, a chemical that essentially ignites the fat-burning process within brown fat. When there is not enough brown fat, the body has to turn to less-efficient heat-generating models, such as shivering. Chronic activation of brown fat [by exposing them to low temperatures or to drugs that target brown fat] is associated with a reduction in liver fat, a resistance to diet-induced obesity and improvement in insulin release.

Whole body cryotherapy stimulates the body's natural healing abilities. WBC uses extreme cold to induce responses on three levels: the circulatory system, the energy meridians and the nervous system. The therapeutic application of extremely cold dry air, usually between −110°C and −140°C triggers a systemic anti-inflammatory response that activates organs, muscles, joints, and skin to heal and repair themselves.

Maryland Cryotherapy | Oct 21, 2019

Despite extremely low temperatures, this treatment is very safe. The nitrogen being used to cool the cryosauna is the same nitrogen that makes up the air we breathe (actually 78% of it). In order to protect the more temperature sensitive tissues such as hands and feet, patients wear dry socks, slippers, and gloves. During each session the body releases endorphins, which are hormones that make person feel good and energetic.

Does Cryotherapy really help you recover faster?

Maryland Cryotherapy | Oct 21, 2019
Maryland Cryotherapy | Oct 21, 2019

Your body’s natural healing mechanisms are transported via your blood. WBC “tricks” your body into implementing the same responses it would if you were freezing, which means blood moves more quickly than normal in order to warm your extremities. Increased, hormone- and enzyme-rich blood flow means increased oxygen content, minimized toxins, and enhanced muscle recovery.
