Are tankless water heaters better than traditional water heaters?

Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020
Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020

There are both pros and cons to purchasing a tankless (or on-demand) water heater. While tankless water heaters will cost more upfront, you will enjoy energy savings of 10% to 30% annually depending on how much hot water you use each day. Tankless water heaters also last approximately twice as long as traditional water heaters. They deliver hot water immediately, so you don’t waste time or water waiting for your water temperature to rise. If you have a smaller home, tankless units take up far less space. Some drawbacks include a higher initial purchase price and installation costs, especially if you are replacing a traditional water heater with a tankless unit. You can also expect more expensive upkeep as tankless water heaters generally cost more to repair. They can be “output-challenged,” so if you regularly use hot water in multiple locations at the same time, it may not be able to keep up.

Why is my water pressure so low?

Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020
Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020

There are many reasons you could have low water pressure, depending on your water source. If you have municipal water, water pressure issues are more unusual and usually mean there is a leak somewhere within the system. If your water source is a well, several elements can affect the pressure. The elevation of your well in relation to your home could have an impact on pressure. Also, your well pump or pressure switch may be malfunctioning. Fittings and valves can also become clogged with deposits and therefore reduce water pressure. If you are experiencing low water pressure issues, contact Haldeman Mechanical for a full evaluation.

How do I know when my water heater needs to be replaced?

Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020
Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020

On average, a standard water heater should last approximately 15 to 20 years. Some factors will reduce that amount, such as hard water, which deposits minerals that build up in the tank. Signs that your water heater is failing include leaking; ongoing smaller problems and repairs; inconsistent water temperature or not enough hot water; loud banging or rumbling noises; and discolored water. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms or your water heater is more than 20 years old, it is probably time to consider a new unit.

What do I do if I have hard water?

Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020
Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020

Hard water isn’t just a nuisance - it can make your skin feel dry, decrease the effectiveness of detergent, and leave a residue on kitchen and bathroom surfaces. Water softeners eliminate hard water by removing hardness minerals like magnesium and calcium from your water using salt, a process called ion exchange. While these hard minerals interfere with things like soap and detergent, the salt does not. You may even need to reduce the amount of soap and detergent you use following installation of a water softener due to the increased effectiveness of these products. Haldeman Mechanical provides free testing for hardness and can recommend the appropriate water softening unit for your home.

What is the ideal indoor humidity level?

Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020
Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020

The ideal humidity level is between 30% and 50% with 40% being the optimal level for comfort. Humidity that is too high can result in excessive moisture in your home that can lead to condensation on your windows and windowsills and possible mold issues. Humidity that is too low can cause itchy skin, respiratory problems, and cracking of porous materials such as hardwood floors. Humidifiers and dehumidifiers can help with these issues and are available in both portable units for specific areas of your home as well as whole house units, which are mounted to your HVAC system.

What are the advantages of smart thermostats?

Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020
Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020

Honeywell smart thermostats have many benefits that can make your home more comfortable and lower energy costs. While older thermostats are less accurate and can cause your system to cycle too fast or too slowly, a smart thermostat maintains a consistent temperature and minimizes uncomfortable temperature variations, which increase utility bills. Smart thermostats can also be controlled from anywhere, allowing you to cool or heat your home as you wish and are programmable to heat and cool your home on a regular schedule. Other features like easy to read digital displays, voice controls, and access from mobile apps make Honeywell smart thermostats a great investment.

How do I know if it’s time to replace my HVAC system?

Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 20, 2018
Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 20, 2018

Most systems start to become less efficient after 10 years. A well maintained system can last longer, but a series of repairs on an older system may end up costing more than a new one. With advancements in energy efficiency, a new system will also save on energy costs. If you are continually repairing an older unit, the unit isn’t cooling your home like it used to, or your energy bills are increasing, it may be time to replace it.

How often should I have my HVAC system serviced?

Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 20, 2018
Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 20, 2018

Twice a year is preferable but a minimum of once a year. Preventive maintenance is the key to keeping your system running at peak efficiency, maximizing the life of your equipment, and minimizing costly repairs by finding problems early. Haldeman Mechanical offers service agreements which include a full cleaning of your equipment, not just an inspection. Discounts on materials and labor and priority emergency service are also included.

How much does it cost to replace an HVAC system?

Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020
Haldeman Mechanical, Inc. | Oct 19, 2020

Prices for new HVAC systems can vary dramatically. Some factors that affect pricing are the size of the system (based on the size of your home), the type of system (oil, gas, etc.), and the efficiency rating (the higher the rating, the higher the initial cost). Most systems will range in price from $5,000 to $8,000, based on a combination of these three factors. If you would like a specific cost estimate for your home, please give Haldeman Mechanical a call, and we can provide you with a free evaluation.
