Procedure: Medialization Laryngoplasty - Implant I can’t say that I am able to cogently explain adequately the procedure comprising my throat surgery other than to say I had a paralyzed left vocal cord that required the placement of an implant to permanently extend that non functioning appendage. I was able to communicate immediately following the surgery and could tell my voice had indeed been restored and with ensuing voice therapy I learned of various exercises to best optimize voice projection with the implant. I count myself blessed to have found Dr. Chmiel via referral and that he was able to take me on as a patient. As a retiree, this was my first life encounter with a significant surgery and coming from a non-medical background i was informationally deficient. The following is a quote I found helpful in understanding what Dr. Chmiel was able to accomplish for me: “Doctors work hard to make their patients feel comfortable. They take a lead role during the hardest parts of our lives, like illness or injury. We’re thankful for their passion, care, and understanding. A good doctor makes these stressful situations a little less scary.” I am exceedingly happy with the results and grateful that I am able to continue leading a normal, active life as a result of his skill. Thank you Doctor Chmiel.

I found my way to Amherst ENT and Dr. Chmiel for a second opinion after 3 months of reduced hearing in one ear and after the first ENT specialist I saw gave me 3 minutes of her time, told me she didn't see any issues and said that my hearing loss was likely permanent. Dr. Chmiel was very pleasant from the moment he entered the exam room. He took the time to review my case and very soon discovered the problem. He also had the solution that he was able to perform 10 minutes later which almost immediately restored my hearing. He was very patient and took the time I needed to answer all my questions. I couldn't have asked for a more positive experience. Coming from Canada meant I would have to pay for this appointment out of pocket but I found the consultation and procedure fees to be very reasonable. For a few hundred dollars, I have my hearing back. Thanks Dr. Chmiel!
