Wish they could allow pets on leash to walk down boardwalks. Other place do. Just another place in Florida that says dog friendly then is not.

Payne’s Prairie Preserve is a park that’s been kept in its primitive state and is well worth the time to explore. Just to the north and east of the Visitor’s Center is a viewing tower that allows you to see the vastness of the prairie. This place is a photographers delight!

This is Lachua trail head. Wonderful trail along the Sink. Flowers, including the native purple passion flower. Alligator flag, lotus in bloom. Liking, Apple Snails. Alligator Turtles, and Alligators. 1.5 miles to an elevated look out tower to see flocks of Sand Hill Cranes, Wild Horses, Bison and Cracker Cattle. Hot in summer, so prepare with water, Hats and sun screen. Enjoy Native Florida.

The trail is only open for about a half mile but well worth the visit. Went in July and saw several different birds. The history of the area was interesting also.

Questions & Answers

Do you have to hike a certain trail or a long way to see the horses and bison?

Jess C, were there on Father's Day and went far into the trail where it ended due to the beginning of water pond that couldn't be crossed. We saw birds, but no horses or bison. Before the long trail begins you through the stables were they once lived. There is no shade from the trees you're totally exposed to the heat, and humidity. Take lots of water and be sure to wear a hat! Have fun!!😀👍

Is there a boat ramp around here?
