Brought in a laptop that was slow & had a few unresponsive keys. Went to pick it up and it had no responsive keys. They said they couldn't do anything about it as keyboards were hard to get. Their solution was to offer me <10% off a refurbished computer that was "comparible" to mine. I needed a computer the next day so I went for it. After using it for a couple weeks I realized it wasn't as capable and didn't have the same features as my old one. It also has a mind of its own. (Changes settings & edits documents while the screen is shut) I got fed up with it and decided to try and fix my old computer. I found the part for $35, ordered it and had it replaced without any tools in about 4 min.

Yes, my experience is they will have you drop off and they will do an assessment / testing and cut you a check after testing
It depends on the model, but most of the time it is between $30-$40. The battery would have to be ordered in.
Possibly. It doesn't usually damage the drive, just the enclosure unit. On many drives, it is replaceable. They can take it apart and test it and let you know.
