To be very brief and honest, the staff know what they are doing. (And they care, which really should be a big part of every medical/health care worker's job.)

It is so frustrating when I try to make a mental health appointment, but the first available just for intake is 2 months out.... Seriously??! I'm rated 70% just for mental health alone, so that should tell you something. I was going to my appointments at the Joliet va clinic, seeing a social worker. That care was just.... OK.... But it was care. I stopped going when covid hit because, well, covid. (I was too scared to see anyone during that time.) Because it has been over a year, I've been told I need to do intake again for mental health. At first, I didn't actually understand what I needed to do to make this appointment, because the person on the phone wasn't the most helpful person I've dealt with there, so that alone was frusting/confusing. But Fine, whatever. I'll do the intake. But then I'm told the next appointment at Joliet va with Hines intake isn't for two months... Just for intake...! (And then I'll have to wait AGAIN for an actual appointment after intake is done.) That's absolutely crazy! This is WHY there is such bad stereotypes when it comes to the VA. A veteran, who is seeking out mental health, shouldn't have to wait for 2 months for an intake appointment. I went ahead and cancelled because I was so irritated. I shouldn't have to consider calling a hotline because the VA is failing to have reasonable wait times so an intake appt. The lady one the phone didn't seem to care. There was no assistance with that, no suggestions for resources, etc. Her tone literally sounded as if she was shrugging her shoulders. Seriously....??? You're making it way too hard for a veteran to get mental health help. Do better.

Questions & Answers

I am a vet in the VA health system in the south side of chicago. Does the Joliet VA Clinic do all xrays at their facility including an endoscopy?

They do general x-rays, they don't do MRIs or an endoscopy, be better if you go to Hines, especially if you're Southside, a lot closer and a lot more clinics at Edward Hines

I am scheduled for my Covid Vacine on the 11th of February are they still providing this at the facility?

Call 815-740-8100 to ask. I know if your appointment is on the 11th you need to keep that appointment wherever it's at. Appointments are tight!

I am new to the area but need to register with a VA facility. Can I just walk in and register and get hooked up with a doctors appointment, etc.

I recommend starting at explore.va.gov to see if you qualify, and follow the guidance there to sign up, or contact your local VA clinic or hospital and ask them that question. If you qualify, applying is pretty straightforward. They'll help you understand what documentation you need. I had to go to the local VA hospital to sign up, at which point I could choose a clinic closer to me.
