You need to be employed by a law enforcement agency before going to the academy. The department or sheriff's office that you work for will pay for your academy tuition and everything. Once you get hired they will send you to the academy to be get certified

I would say it kind of is but when agencies need people they will expand the options based on experience and or college education normally goes hand-in-hand also if you have military it's a big plus those things or three things together can give you an opportunity to get hired and the agency send you to the academy
