A good example is a security product, like anti-virus software. You could buy it yourself, but you never know if it will work well or tell you if there is a problem. With an MSP (managed services provider) they take care of the product for you on all of your computers. So they "manage" it for you.
Do you want your costs to be predictable? Then you should hire a managed services provider. You can also get other benefits like when an employee leaves, all of the knowledge they have leaves too!
As far as I'm concerned, an IT solution is one that solves a business problem. For example, if you are paying someone to spend lots of time moving around spreadsheets and what amounts to data entry, that can be automated. The actual tool used to solve the problem is not really important but it's the solution that matters.

Our IT services are based on monthly support packages. We don't provide IT services on a ad hoc basis, our strength is providing consistent tech services so we can be proactive. More important then the service is support.
