A nice little hike with the long trail between 2-3 miles long (took about 1 hour). It does get a bit hilly in the back and slippery because it's closer to the river. Lots of different birds to watch and I saw some rabbits too.

Great walking trail. Lovely tree canopy keeps you out of the sun for the majority of the time. I did wear bug repellent and recommend it. There can definitely be some muddy spots after rain, so be mindful of recent weather.

One of the best hikes in the Des Moines area, which admittedly isn't saying all that much. Still this is a great 3 mile loop with side-paths that can add on additional mile or 2. The first half mile is near a major road so you have the urban vibe but before long it veers off deep into the woods. Its easy to forget you're still in the city and get immersed in the trees. There's a decent amount of elevation so it feels like a pretty legitimate hike. It's still a long way off from the kind of hiking out west but it's pretty impressive for suburban Iowa.

This has always been my favorite trail to walk on. I always find cool things I dont normally see like really weird looking bugs and mushrooms. One thing to keep in mind is the mud gets very slick the day after it rains so be prepared for that. Normally the larger trail can easily take 2 hours if you are just walking through. Also last I was their we seen a beautiful blue butterfly❤

I hiked the long loop and would say that it would be too hilly/bumpy for a jogging stroller. You might consider the trails at Walnut Woods State Park.
No. This wildlife area is named after Tallmadge E. Brown, a successful Des Moines lawyer who acquired large tracts of land around Des Moines in the late 1800s. One of them was this beautiful forest acquired by the Conservation Board in 1972.
I agree with some of the above post. I also 2nd walnut woods, they have the lodge that looks like it would be a pretty nice area for a wedding/reception
Good question. I got this off of a government website: Brown's Woods is named after Tallmadge E. Brown, a lawyer who gained large tracts of land around Des Moines in the late 1800s. One of them was this land, and it was acquired by the Conservation Board in 1972.
