Visiting the thrift shop on 9/3/2022 for the first time in this town that I’ve lived in for 20 years, I was happy to see the vast amount of great quality items it had to offer. Although, my experience with a particular volunteer was quite distasteful. I walked in by myself and started looking through the collection. I had passed a brown haired woman sitting then a blonde hair woman that was organizing items. A few minutes later, my 2 sisters arrived. They were immediately greeted by the woman with brown hair, handed a bag to fill, and informed about summer sale. My sister asked why I didn’t have a bag, I said I didn’t know what was going on. We gathered our items which the cost was $10 coat, $20 coat, 3 $1 items and a $6 bag of clothes. Neither me or my sisters had cash, so I left to go to an ATM. I came back to pay and was quoted $57 by the brunette and paid her. I walked out, realized something was not right and went back. The blonde woman re-tallied the items I bought to $39 and was super helpful in helping me realize I was overcharged. The blonde woman said to the brunette why did you overcharge her to which the brunette said and I quote “it was only $20”. Nothing after that. I was so flabbergasted but grateful the blonde woman had my back, I just took my $18 change and left. I have lived in Manorville for 20 years. I am worried that this woman holds the money in a Fanny pack around her waist that goes into the functionality and development of The Manorville Historical Society as a ‘volunteer’. This lady is definitely paying herself on the side. I also want to mention that after the fact, my sister (who is a half black woman that can pass as white) informed me that when I (a full black woman) left to go to the ATM, she heard the brunette say “I don’t want to seem racist” and stopped speaking when she saw my sister was near. This was very distasteful and she should absolutely be ashamed to call herself a volunteer.
