We enlisted the services of Zachary Cooper after my parents passed last year. We were completely overwhelmed with all the processes and paperwork required to close out their various accounts and policies. There were may hurdles to overcome, which was especially difficult when we knew so little on the topic of trusts, estates and probate, let alone how to speak the language when we reached out to the many financial institutions. Zachary offered various options for assisting us, including just guiding us through the work. However, we chose to have him handle everything, and he did an amazing job. It was such a relief to hand the burden over to him and rest in the knowledge that we were in competent hands. We will definitely be using him in the near future for our own estate planning.

Mr. Cooper worked with us to craft a set of legal documents. He not only scheduled to meet with us promptly, but met us at a location close to our home. He explained everything in detail and offered helpful suggestions toward our purpose, which we followed. We will not hesitate to contact Mr. Cooper again for any future legal needs.

We cannot say enough good things about Zachary Cooper. We were nervous about family planning but knew we needed to have a plan in the event that something would happen to us. We are so glad we worked with Zachary with this. His patience, kindness and understanding stood out the most. Once finished we completely understood all aspects of our family plan and were overjoyed with the process. We would highly recommend Zachary Cooper to anyone wanting advice/counsel for developing a family plan.

Zachary A. Cooper Law | Feb 13, 2022

In North Carolina, state law determines who gets your assets when you die without a will. Most people find, however, the law gives their assets to people who they do not want to get their assets or divides their assets up in a way they would not want.

Do I need a revocable living trust?

Zachary A. Cooper Law | Feb 13, 2022

A revocable living trust can be a great part of a complete estate plan. However, trusts are sometimes overused by attorneys. Your unique situation dictates whether you should or should not have a revocable living trust, so you should meet with an Estate Planning Attorney to determine if a revocable living trust is right for you.

I do not own much. Do I still need a will?

It does not matter how much you own, you need a complete Estate Plan. Even if you do not own much, you still want to decide what happens to what you do have after you die. Furthermore, working with an Estate Planning Attorney allows you to plan for when you do own more.

The typical answer is you should get a complete Estate Plan when you turn 18 and update it periodically. By starting early, your Estate Planning Attorney can walk with you through life and help you tailor your plans to your wishes at all stages of life.

What about attorneys at my bank?

While generally better than DIY Estate Planning websites, these attorneys often do not focus solely on Estate Planning. Even the ones that do are often problematic for the same reason DIY Estate Planning websites are: they give you the tools without teaching you how to use them. This is not always the case, but it is something to be on the lookout for.

Are DIY Estate Plans legally binding?

Zachary A. Cooper Law | Feb 13, 2022
Zachary A. Cooper Law | Feb 13, 2022

In some cases yes and in some cases no. However, the problem with using DIY Estate Planning websites is they only give you the tools (a will, powers of attorney, and sometimes a trust) without explaining to you how to use those tools as part of your complete Estate Plan. This can end up costing your loved ones time, money, and stress simply because you were not taught how to use the tools you were given.

How much does Estate Planning cost?

Zachary A. Cooper Law | Feb 13, 2022
Zachary A. Cooper Law | Feb 13, 2022

It is nearly impossible to know how much an Estate Plan will cost without meeting with an Estate Planning Attorney. This is because each client has a unique situation.

How is Estate Planning different from getting a will and power of attorney?

Zachary A. Cooper Law | Feb 13, 2022
Zachary A. Cooper Law | Feb 13, 2022

Wills and powers of attorney are part of a complete Estate Plan. You can think of them as tools you use to help build your complete Estate Plan.

What is Estate Planning?

Zachary A. Cooper Law | Feb 13, 2022
Zachary A. Cooper Law | Feb 13, 2022

Estate Planning is simply creating a plan for who gets your wealth after you die and who will manage your wealth if you cannot do so yourself or you die.
