I volunteered here for nine months before becoming a staff member. In the past, I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer with a number of shelters and transitional housing facilities around the country prior to retirement. But this place is one of a kind. They even have a number of businesses who partner with the program to hire successful graduates after they’ve completed their recovery.

Questions & Answers

why are you endangering Aurora residents by allowing convicted serial killer Thomas Kokoraleis to reside there?

Bernard Laskowski | Oct 12, 2019
Wayside Cross Ministries | Oct 11, 2020

We are a Bible-base, Christ-centered recovery center for the broken, addicted and abused. Anyone with a record must register first with the local police, submit to drug screening & agree to participate in our recovery program. There are restrictions on where people can go within the center & on our grounds. If rules are broken, they are no longer in our program. We have a very good reputation with the local police & work closely to assure the people we care for & the community at large remains safe. For over 90 years we have been doing this in Aurora & our reputation remains untarnished, thanks to God. Each person is also assigned a mentor from a local church which is just one aspect of the recovery process. Our graduates & staff work together to assure that newcomers to the recovery program adapt well & assimilate to a very structured recovery process that we have in place. We accept all who are broken, addicted abused or otherwise homeless as Christ commanded his Church.

We are a 90 year old, Bible-based, Christ-centered ministry with 6 divisions with different focuses to help our neighbors in need. Wayside also provides Short-Term/Long-Term shelters and transitional housing for people who are recovering from homelessness, addiction, domestic violence and for ex-offenders. We provide support, educational assistance, job training and connections with our Business Partners for our residents in recovery who hire from the program. That's the short answer. Your stay can range from 30 days to over 2 years based on how many programs you choose to participate in while here. You can leave the program anytime or are expelled for breaking our Zero Drug Use policy or being disruptive and disrespectful to others in the program. Learn more at: https://www.waysidecross.org/ministries-and-services/ We also have a Homeless Day Center in Elgin that provides free breakfast, lunch, showers and laundry for the homeless and under-resourced in our community.

Judi. yes residence can receive care packages. Phase four residents have jobs outside the facility where they earn and save their money. That’s how the program is designed. Lithia Phillips | Oct 11, 2020
david vest | Oct 11, 2020

Your husband can go through the program.there is no waiting list. What I would do is call first to see if they have any beds available. As for you there is a place called Life Spring which is an all female program. They are connected to Wayside Cross Ministries. It is a7 month program. They will teach you about our Lord and savior. While on the program you will be assigned to a place to work. You will be required to attend chapel every night until you move up to the next phase. You will be on grounds restrictions for at least 30 days or more.

Do you think you are hurting aurors

Stan Wonsowicz | Oct 12, 2019
Wayside Cross Ministries | Oct 12, 2019

For over 90 years we have faithfully served the community and the broken, addicted and abused as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ commands. Lives have been transformed and people re-enter the community, hold jobs and raise families after leaving Wayside. When they graduate, they have their GED, are sober and ready to rebuild their lives. If they stay through the long-term recovery phase, they have jobs, save their money and are better positioned to find and afford housing and achieve the things most people aspire to attain. Most importantly they have the added benefit of a church family that will support and encourage them, the rest of their lives. Statistically speaking, we have not yet had a long-term resident, leave and re-enter the justice system and are considered a valuable partner by the State in boosting their re-entry figures. Because of this 9-decade long track record, we can say with confidence, God is healing lives and raising the spiritually broken in Aurora.
