Brookdale Lake Shore is good place for active, social seniors. If that's how you describe your loved one, read no further. In my case, I moved my antisocial 90+ loved one in because she was forgetting to take her medications and wasn't eating properly. We rented a "furnished" one bedroom with a lovely lake view. She preferred to have all her meals in her room, unfortunately, rather than going to the dining room, so many of my issues centered around the room service. First, on Thurs she was expected to choose her meals for the entire week, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Without assistance, this was too much for her. Many days I'd arrive and she'd only have mashed potatoes for dinner. Or, as a vegetarian she'd receive a tray of bbq ribs. I'm not blaming Brookdale for whatever she wrote on the sheet on Thursday, but someone should have helped her fill out a week long menu before turning it in. The place is just too big to notice she wasn't eating. Also, meals arrive three hours early in a paper bag and styrofoam container, which was always cold by meal time. I would visit her at 3:00 and her dinner would already be there, ice cold. Another issue I had was that the unit is offered "furnished," which is great if your loved one is coming right out of the hospital. The problem is, if they haven't accepted that they can't go home, and still believe Brookdale is temporary, at month 3 you are stuck with an addition $900 a month furniture rental bill if your loved one doesn't want you to move their own furniture in. Also, no such think as a quick visit, one of the three elevators was down for months, which resulted in at least 10 minutes of elevator waiting every single visit. The final straw was that my loved one fell in her unit and broke her hip. It was weird that no one from Brookdale bothered to call me to see how she was. Not sure why other than concerned about litigation, but I saw it as this place being just way to big and understaffed. When I told them she'd be gone for a few months in rehab, they said I had to continue to pay for all her personal services even though she would not be there for to utilize them. Since then I've moved her to a smaller facility where they ask her each day what she'd like to eat for each meal, rather than filling out forms, and she's so much happier. She's in a place where the staff doesn't revolve so much and they know what she likes and bring it to her without asking. Like I said, Brookdale is probably fine for active seniors but if your loved one needs special attention, I would not recommend it. I had trouble finding helpful reviews when I was searching so hopefully this helps someone.

Brookdale LSD has been an excellent place for my parents. They made new friends, enjoyed the social and dining activities in the building, the nursing and care staff are attentive and helpful. The location is wonderful, with lovely views and the ability to go outside and enjoy the vibrancy of the park is a bonus.
