Definitely wear gear. Civilians get assigned randomly and get shot by both sides. More often people shoot since it's easier than trying to figure out if you have your arm band and if it's in the right place.

You can rent the weapon to try it out. Buying a decent gun starts around 150-200 bucks. You don't need much else for gear except eye protection and mouth protection. The community is quite welcoming so see if other people will let you hold their weapons if you don't know what you want.

Gun models are very rarely restricted. You're limited by fps depending on gun type. The m4 is always a great starter platform as you can customize it and parts are widely available.

You have to have your own camo. Many people have at least two sets, people that are part of a team dominantly have one color but regularly switch out for a change of pace. Start with the one you like the best and then later add ah least one set of the other. Or find a team and see what their color is.
