Dr. Glenn has wonderful bedside manners. Takes time to listen and help advise. He was able to ease my anxieties, quickly and efficiently get the job done, and at a less cost then my previous unhappy experience at the place I'm usually sent. I reccomend Dr. Glenn as he steps above and beyond expectations.

Questions & Answers

What is Orthognathic Surgery?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

Uneven alignment of the jawbone, the cause of overbite, underbite, and crossbite, is often accompanied by crooked teeth, which may have grown at odd angles to accommodate an imbalanced bite. Creating unity between correctly aligned teeth and a balanced jawbone requires a collaborative effort between Dr. Glenn and your orthodontist. Known as orthognathic surgery, the procedure is a combination of corrective jaw surgery to restore bite balance, and orthodontic treatment to realign teeth to match the new, proper orientation of your bite. By improving jaw and teeth alignment for improved function, orthognathic surgery also significantly improves the visual appearance of a smile, and can greatly boost a patient's confidence.

What are the most common types of wisdom teeth impaction?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

Impacted wisdom teeth are classified according to the nature of their growth. A few common complications include: - Bony Impaction: the wisdom tooth was not able to grow out of the jawbone - Soft Tissue Impaction: when the tooth tries to erupt, but becomes stuck in the gum tissue before it finishes growing - Partial eruption/impaction: a third molar becomes impacted when it is obstructed by a neighboring tooth and cannot fully erupt - Horizontal impaction: a wisdom tooth that has grown sideways within the jawbone - Mesial/Distal impaction: when the tooth angles toward existing teeth, which pushes these teeth out of place and leads to discomfort and pain

Why should wisdom teeth get removed?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

Including wisdom teeth, a typical adult mouth has 32 teeth. Unfortunately, most adults' mouths can only accommodate 28 teeth. For some patients, all four wisdom teeth may grow in straight and comfortably, generating no discomfort and posing no threat to surrounding teeth. Usually, however, wisdom teeth have little room to erupt on the dental ridge, or fail to grow in at a proper angle, which can push surrounding teeth out of place and lead to a host of dental health issues, including pain and discomfort.

How long is the recovery time after a gum grafting procedure?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

While it may take a week or two for the treated area of your gum line to fully heal, you should be able to return to your normal activities the day after the procedure. You will likely experience some discomfort and swelling. However, most patients are able to manage their symptoms using over-the-counter pain medication. While your gum line heals, avoid brushing and flossing the treated area. Dr. Glenn may provide you with a special mouthwash or an antibiotic to reduce your risk of infection. For a week or two after your treatment, eat soft foods, such as eggs, yogurt, and pasta.

What are the functional benefits of dental implants?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

Dental implants provide many functional advantages: - Unmatched stability: One of the biggest advantages of dental implants is that they will not allow your restorations to slip or move in your mouth. - Improved speech: Long-term denture wearers often complain that their dentures move around when speaking. This can cause you to mumble or slur your words, which is embarrassing and frustrating. You will not have that problem with dental implants. - Optimal comfort: Traditional dentures can sometimes leave sore spots due to movement. Since dental implants hold dentures in place just like natural teeth, you can expect a far more comfortable bite. - A Long-lasting Solution: Dental implants have been found to last 40 years or longer with proper care. Although your restorations may eventually need to be replaced, your implants likely will not.

What is the process of a gum grafting procedure?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

Before recommending a gum graft, Dr. Glenn will perform a full evaluation of your oral health to determine the cause of your gum recession. He may recommend an additional treatment to improve the health of your gums prior to the grafting procedure. On the day of treatment, we can administer sedation and anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable. The most common type of gum graft is a connective-tissue graft. During this procedure, Dr. Glenn will remove a small flap of tissue from the soft palate and place the tissue over the exposed teeth and roots. In some cases, he can instead perform a pedicle graft, which uses tissue from the neighboring teeth instead of the palate.

What are some of the aesthetic benefits of dental implants?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

Traditional dentures can be unstable, which is often noticeable to those around you. Since implants keep your dentures in place at all times, those around you probably will not notice that you are wearing a restoration. In addition, modern dental materials used to create your restorations are designed to mimic the lifelike translucency of natural enamel. We can coordinate care to restore your smile in a way that looks absolutely natural.

What are some factors that can contribute to gum recession?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

Gum recession can cause sensitivity to hot and cold foods and lead to more serious oral health concerns, such as infection, decay, and tooth loss. A number of factors can contribute to this problem, including: - Gum disease - Poor oral hygiene - Genetics - Diabetes - Tobacco use - Hormonal changes, such as those in puberty or pregnancy In some cases, grinding or clenching your teeth can also damage gum tissue and trigger recession. Lip and tongue piercings which rub against the gum line can sometimes cause a similar problem, as well. A gum graft from Dr. Glenn can repair damaged tissue and prevent continued recession for improved oral health.

What reconstructive dentistry procedures do you offer?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

Orthognathic surgery can be carried out as a combined effort between Dr. Glenn and a patient’s orthodontist to achieve better symmetry in the teeth and jawbone, and often involves orthodontic braces as well as jaw surgery. Dr. Glenn may also use jaw surgery to reconstruct a jawbone that has grown weak from extensive tooth loss. Restoring lost teeth is most effective using dental implants; however, jawbone atrophy must be addressed before implants can be placed. For patients who want to receive dental implants, but lack sufficient jawbone structure to support the posts, bone grafting offers a surgical solution. Using bone from a donor source, or from the patient’s own body, a ridge augmentation (or sinus lift) can increase the density and strength of the jawbone to adequately support any number of dental implants.

Can dental implants be used for restorative procedures?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

Even if you already have a dental bridge or full denture, dental implants can provide improved support and long-term oral health preservation. If you qualify, Dr. Glenn can place the dental implants and restoration in the same day. In fact, in certain cases Dr. Glenn can often place the implant and restoration immediately after the tooth extraction. Patients who are not candidates for traditional implants because of insufficient jawbone structure may be candidates for mini dental implants (MDI), which are significantly thinner and are mostly used to stabilize dentures.

What factors affect the cost of dental implants?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

A dental implants treatment typically involves multiple factors that all affect the total cost. These factors include: - The number of implants placed: Costs increase when a patient will be receiving more than one implant. Dental crowns require one post, while complete dentures will need to be supported by at least four implants. - The type of restoration received: The size of your restoration and the materials used to manufacture it will also affect the cost of treatment. For example, a full denture will cost more than a single crown, and materials like zirconia are more expensive than standard porcelain. - Sedation: We offer several types of sedation to ensure our patients are comfortable during treatment. The type you select will impact the cost of your treatment. - Additional procedures: If you have suffered significant jawbone recession, you may need to undergo a bone grafting procedure before you can receive dental implants. This preparatory surgery is not included in the base cost of treatment.

How does the process for dental implants begin?

Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022
Andrew R. Glenn, DDS, MD | Sep 25, 2022

Planning is the first and most important stage of successful dental implants placement surgery. Healthy teeth are precisely aligned to meet comfortably and absorb the pressures of biting and chewing. When one or more teeth are lost, their replacements must be positioned with equal precision. For increased accuracy, Dr. Glenn utilizes the iCAT 3D imaging system to create a computer-generated surgical guide. The advanced cone beam computer tomography (CT) technology produces crystal clear digital images of the mouth and jawbone, and allows us to focus on a specific area of concern. The images will also help determine if sufficient jawbone structure is present to support the implant, or if bone grafting is necessary to strengthen the jawbone.
