Pretty fascinating history with lots of interpretive signage. You really don’t get a sense of the Fort until you walk around the entire thing. Make sure you read everything in order to understand the scale of the Fort. So nice that the area was preserved. Much bigger than I thought it would be. We spent about 15-20 minutes before heading down to Mitchelville for the connected history.

Very neat little attraction that doesn’t take long to visit but you can walk the trails if you want to spend more time there. I enjoyed the history and art combined!!!

Interesting history that I was unaware of, cool to see up close and imagine yourself during that time frame. Pretty amazing what they built!

Small and unassuming, this fort plays a vital role in the story of African American heritage in the coastal area. Well signed, we learned much about the construction of the fort, its purpose and role in the Civil War. Still in cleanup stages from Hurricane Matthew, it was a little hard to image the layout, but it was a good size and walkable for my toddler. Well worth a stop for history buffs.
