Great experience. My first trail in the US.

This was an easy hike, but well worth it. Seeing a flame behind a waterfall was a surprise and delight.

Id like to point out that getting to the actual Eternal Flames, be aware that it is located at a separate entrance than the main portion of the actual Chestnut Ridge park. There are plenty of signs along the street guiding you. However, you will know you are in the right starting place once you 've arrived in the rocky, unpaved parking lot. You can start to head down the foot path following it through the woods, up and down some slightly steep hills.. I believe you will come across a point where you can either go left or right, at this point in order to get to the falls and see the eternal flame, you will need to continue on LEFT. Once you get to the crick, the path should continue to guide you. If for whatever reason you lose sight of the main path, just continue left down the crick or in drier months, the crick-bed. Eventually you will reach the falls and within them, the Eternal Flame itself.
Yes. Its a big parking lot and despite being unpaved, it is fairly flat.
About a half mile. 6 tenths it says on the sign
Yes, I just came from there maybe an hour ago. That was my first hike, enjoyed it but am really out of shape 😅
There are small flame markers on the trees that mark the trail the trail is less than 1 mile long but can be a slippery walk during the winter as a portion before the falls is along side the creek bed.
I believe you can't camp where the Falls are but they do have a camping grounds in the park
The trail is wide and super easy. I can't remember if the trail goes along the creek that's because the water was really low and we could walk in the creek. At that point it may be difficult for a 4 year old so you definitely may want to hold their hand or watch them closely. But you may get lucky with all the rain the fall should have water. The trail is not long so if you go at the pace of your child he or she should have a great experience. If any of my kids were four years old today I would have no problem taking them on this hike.
Id recommend in the morning to just see the falls that way there isnt alot of people, however if you're concerned about the heat dont be between shade and the river anytime during the day is good
no one knows. the few who have returned, remember nothing but the blinding majesty of the Flame
There is a natural gas outlet under the falls which you can light and see the flame through tbe falls.
Yeah, it's a methane deposit so it will frequently have a tiny flame. But if you do visit, bring a lighter it case the flame went out.
Park is open 7am to 9pm during summer and 7am To dusk during winter. Otherwise you are trespassing and can be fined. If you don't know the trail in daylight, I would highly advise against an attempt at night. Stay safe with whatever you choose!
I would plan to see other things as well. Not just the flame.
Yes it's open year round and not really wheelchair friendly
Just they light it again the park people. The natural gas is permanently flowing
It's a park, but I don't know about near by camping
t
yes there is, when you arrive look at the trail map and it will guide you. It's a rather difficult mountian bike trail.
Unfortunately, there is no accessible route or an overlook area. The falls and flame are not visible from the top of the ravine.
20 minutes down, 40 minutes up!
All week, from 7AM until dusk.
Not really! Its a shallow creek.
