Great scenery and biodiversity. Lots of birds and deer. Insects are plenty but not too bad. Best forest in Cook County

Deer Grove West is the best cook country has to offer. A great look into the past ice age and what the woods would have looked like 100 years ago

Oh my goodness! This must be the most beautiful forest preserve in Cook County. I just could not take enough pictures with the streams and the lake and the breathtaking fall colors.

We discovered this place while looking for quality hiking trails where we could bring our dog. We prefer hikes that last a couple of hours- usually around 3-5 miles at our pace- and that really put you out in nature. The trails here are well-maintained, easy to use, easy to navigate and not too crowded. Some of the main trails are gravel and some are paved for a little while but it’s not too long before you find a nice dirt footpath that winds you through the woods. In fact, the number of smaller little jaunt trails makes this our new favorite hiking spot- you can kind of add them all together for a long hike or pick and choose. The woods are beautiful- we love the oak trees! I think we found the perfect place to catch your breath away from the city.

All pets must be leashed, I'm assuming you can keep your cat in the backpack, just if you bring it out make sure it's on a harness and a leash :)
Allowed but you need a license if you are over 15
I wouldn't call it a lake and I wouldn't even try to swim in this ... Swamp. I didn't see anyone attempting to swim or even to use a kayak.
They are at picnic Grove #4 and #5. Come in off of the Quentin road entrance and there will be maps posted by the trailheads.
That is a good question. Up to two months ago. Parking was closed in suburban Cook County. No sure what they plan to do. As of 11/13/20 they are open. You are advised to check the day you want to visit. You can also opt in to received text messages regarding closures. Currently, you need to wear a mask in the park and maintain social distancing. Slight chance of rain tomorrow.
I've never seen anyone doing it anytime that I've ever been there
I am not sure there is any fishing here
Yes. Gorgeous too
1800 acres of both prairie, woodlands, & picnic areas. It isn't mowed & manicured fakely like some other preserves in cook county can be. It's one of my favorites around here.
The marked trails can be used for skiing but they are not reserved for skiing only
