I lived and grew up in the Smith Housing from the 60’s to the 90’s. It wasn’t the safest place to live in the earlier years but it has improved tremendously. They’ve upgraded the inside and cleaned up the exterior. Of the NYCHA housing, the Alfred E. Smith is by far the best well-kept in the most desire location.

I grew up in the Smith Houses and I can tell you that recently they've made a lot of improvements. Gone are the days of walking around in the dark with those old high pressure sodium orange lights, it gave the neighborhood a creepy vibe, especially walking around at night. In 2018, they installed bright white LED lights. Depending on which building you live, it offers you views of the wonderful skyline. We're a walking distance to the new South Street Seaport, the East River, and Chinatown.

At one time it did have an outdoor pool, but that was part of the Parks Department back in 1970's and 1980's. The pool was in-between PS 126 and 54 Madison Street. Due to neglect, the Parks Department tore it down and installed a children's jungle gym in its place and several sprinklers.
You'll have to walk down from Fulton street, as if you're walking towards the south street Seaport, then walk to pearl Street.
