As was mentioned by some other reviewers, to enter the cottage itself you must be on a guided tour. The security guard let us through the gates and we were able to read information in the visitor center and have a quick walk around the grounds. If a guided tour is your thing, book in advance, but I don't recommend just showing up at the site as we felt a little awkward and uncertain about being there and whether we were "allowed". That said, it is an interesting place and neat to see.

Visited five years ago with some out-of-town guest and had a marvelous docent. Visited today and docent “Mary Rose “ did not know history and seem to draw out fabrications in each room. Very disappointing.

Interesting tour and a beautiful house and grounds. Always cool to visit the places filled with so much history in DC.

Strollers are allowed in the educational center, but I do not believe the cottage has accessible access. I would check their website or call.
Abraham Lincoln presenters do not regularly appear at the Cottage. However there is a life size statue of Lincoln that you can take a photo with.
Directly across the street you have 2 choices. There is an 80s type bar that is pretty interesting. The food there is good. They have burgers and such. Also there is a soul food type place as well that is good. Also i am a vegetarian and was able to find something at both locations. I dont recall the name of either right off hand but both are easily found with a google map search.
