Take the shuttle bus
It will take you to the nearest metro train line and I think that would be national airport. You can board the train there to get to the Smithsonian
May I hold a piece of paper on the subway vent and check for the airflow if it’s a exhaust or fresh air intake?

I think it would be fine, but I would check with a metro station employee before doing so. They might be very helpful. Also, depending on the outside weather, the airflow might be governed to keep the tunnels cool or warm. CO2 levels might dictate the airflow, as well. Have Fun!
