O gauge is 1/48 scale, HO is 1/87 scale. HO literally means Half O. An HO engine that is 7 inches long would be about 13 inches in O gauge. O is AC, alternating current power of 18 volts, HO is 16 volts DC power, except for Marklin HO. O gauge usually uses 3 rails, HO only two. HO is generally cheaper as well. O makes a better Christmas tree train due to its size and weight.
