Go to the post office and ask. You pay for the first six months and they give you your box key.
Go to the Post Office and talk to the counter clerk. They'll fix you up.
It sounds like you may not be raising the red flag that should be attached to the side of the mailbox so that the mailman knows you are sending mail.
