Amazing scenery needed more signage so one knows where to go. $12 ea adult lots of steep steps to climb so need a cane or staff if your weak in the knees or have vertico, slick spots go slowly. Absolutely amazing to see & experience at least once. 😃

Nice little spot, smaller than imagined, and off west from Bankhead National Forest. Didn't see the glow worms because you have to call early Sunday morning the week before the Saturday night you want to go. Glow worms peak was past as of June though they are still making a good show. Will have to come back for that. Navigating the parking lot was tight and difficult. There was a shop with some snacks and stuff. Canyon floor is small and cool.

One of my favorite places in Alabama. Its like stepping back, way back in time. It is prehistoric. Pictures don't do it justice. The canyon floor is cool and the creek water is cooler lol. A must do!

It was a beautiful experience to see those glow worms. I would definitely recommend going. No one really told us but they’d recommend bringing a flash light tho make sure that it’s a red colored one. Also come early and hike the canyon floor. It’ll enhance your night tour when you’ve seen some of the locations on site during the day.

They have a web site. Should tell what the exsct cost and the hours are. Just search Dismal Canyon near Phil Campbell, Alabama. Can't remember the exact price but it was worth every penny.
There is a place to swim in front of the lodge. Or at least there were some girls swimming there when we were there.
Some parts may be tough for them to do. However, he will be able to walk about and play in the water. My neice took her kids. Age 2 & 3. Her mother went too.. Bring dry clothes and let them play. Don't take them what it is cold. You would have to carry them across the water. I think would be difficult Step a cross stones! Have fun it is beautiful.
Check their website, they have a phone number on there you can call if hours are not listed
I'm sorry but Dismal Canyon is not handicap accessible as you enter the canyon area. Loose gravel and uneven passages make it challenging explore.
Yes, dogs are allowed. We saw a few when we visited and they looked like they were enjoying it!
We have visited The Dismals three times. Can't wait to go back again. The cabins are special to us. I proposed marriage to Her there in December, 2013. Just visited again in August, 2021 to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Wonderful place to disconnect from the rat race and relax.
Do the dismals canyon then Rattlesnake saloon and then the coondog cemetery. They are all close together.
Yes, they have five and are building a sixth. The three creekside sites are about the size you'd expect at a state park. We stayed at site 3 two years ago and loved it. It truly is creekside and the babbling brook put us right to sleep. The only "complaint" is that there wasn't a big enough flat spot for my enormous 10x20' tent, but a normal-sized tent would be perfect. The two other sites, Dead Water Bluff and Sleeping Water, are PHENOMENAL. In my opinion, Sleeping Water is the best single campsite in the state. It has a rock bluff and a bit of a cave, and a small private waterfall constantly runs off of it. Inside the cave area is a colony of Dismalites that you can see when it's pitch black. It's a huge site - they say it'll camp 15 people. The cave does trickle, so be sure to use your rainfly if you decide to camp in it. The sites aren't cheap. The land is privately owned, so don't expect state park prices. You can find more info at www.DismalsCanyon.com
Yes, I took my dog.
I went durthe day and saw no lights.
Yes they do night tour's. They are very cool to see.
We took our dog when we went (but leashed the entire time). He enjoyed splashing in the edge of the stream. Dog (& you) should be in fairly good shape -- this is a hike on uneven, sometimes steep sections, some sections with steps. But a wonderful place to explore!
Wouldn't really be a need for backpacking. It's only a 1.5 mile loop. Primitive Campsites are available. More info here: call (205) 993-4559, https://www.dismalscanyon.com/campsites
I believe it is $12 for day, $10 for night (must have reservations) and around $18 for both.
Rattlesnake saloon built in the side of a mountain
They have a very informative website
