Decided to buy a flag for my Father's birthday. Chose Gettysburg because of their great selection and are a New York business. Fresh out of the bag and up on the pole, looks great and feels great as advertised. Shipped almost instantly after placing the order and got here quickly. Would order from them again.

I've been coming here for flags since I've been able to walk. My dad would bring me in to get his flags and now I get all my flags, poles, and hardware from them! Wouldn't even think about going anywhere else. Awesome company!

I always had a US flag flying from my home and was proud to display it. When we moved from East Greenbush to Las Vegas the weather conditions were drastically different. Wind and high heat really took a toll on our flag and it needed to be replaced. Trying to find a flag locally was an effort in futility so we went back to our roots. I ordered a new flag and pole from Gettysburg Flag Works and it is now displayed proudly on our home. The quality of the flag and construction of the pole are far superior to anything you can find locally. The order arrive very quickly and it was absolutely simple to install. Thanks Gettysburg Flag for a great product - I would highly recommend them for your flag needs !

First time customer and pretty picky with my flags. I ordered a large flag after I read that they are fully lock stitched. I received my flag today and got a chain stitched flag. For those who don’t know, chain stitches that tear travel and lock stitches do not. Why isn’t anyone checking that the inventory is correct?? Won’t use it and won’t buy a chain stitched flag. I paid a premium for a flag that I believed was fully lock stitched. I had to travel to the next city to get to a ups store to send it back. Not only am I out the shipping charges to receive a garbage flag, I’m also out gas to get there. I ordered a flag somewhere else. After my experience I feel like getting my refund might be a “hurry up and wait” situation. Spoke with Adam about how long it would possibly take to get a refund and his response to me was “I’m not sure, you should receive it when when we get to it”. Common sense would of told me that./ I am updating my review because the company has made what I felt a wrong a right now! Patrick deserves all the credit on this one. He replaced that horribly made chain stitched flag with a tough lock stitched flag. He also remembered me months later. I’m so appreciative of what he has done and now would do business here again. Thank you Patrick!

The best flagpole light is likely the one that works best with your flagpole configuration. Solar flagpole lights are a terrific option if you’re looking to light an outdoor in-ground flagpole. Our top mounted solar flagpole light is one of the best on the market. It’s an environmentally friendly flagpole lighting solution that is suitable for outdoor flagpoles up to 25 feet tall. Some key features of our solar flagpole light include: Easy DIY installation - no special tools, wiring or electrical work required Operates with self-charging solar batteries (included) Solar panels collect sunlight throughout the day 800 lumens of brightness Turns on automatically at dusk Low maintenance Affordably priced
The number of lumens necessary to sufficiently illuminate your flag will depend on how your flag is being displayed, how you are lighting your flag, and how tall your flagpole is. If you choose to light your flagpole from the ground, you’ll need a light that offers anywhere from 1,600 to 25,000 lumens. Shorter flagpoles require fewer lumens, so while a 15 foot flagpole may be sufficiently lit with 1,600 lumens, a 25 foot pole will need closer to 25,000 lumens. With a solar flagpole light, you’ll need significantly fewer lumens to light your flag effectively. Top mounted flagpole lights range in lumens from as low as 50 to as high as 1,000. In general, for a standard outdoor flagpole, a solar flagpole light that shines at 200 lumens should get the job done. Our top mounted solar flagpole light clocks in at 800 lumens, guaranteeing that your flag will be well lit on even the darkest nights.
There are a couple of options to consider when it comes to lighting a flagpole. In general, you can either light the flagpole from the ground with spotlights or flood lights, or light it from atop the flagpole with a top-mounted flagpole light. This means you can either have lights shining upwards at the flag, illuminating it from below, or you can have a light shining down on the flag from above.

NO, WALL MOUNTED AMERICAN FLAGS ARE PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE. DISPLAY PLACEMENT AND HEIGHT CONSIDERATIONS SHOULD STILL BE FOLLOWED AS RECOMMENDED BY THE US FLAG CODE. IF HANGING VERTICALLY THE AMERICAN FLAG SHOULD BE DISPLAYED WITH STAR FIELD (CANTON) TO THE VIEWERS LEFT.
WHILE THERE ARE A VARIETY OF OPTIONS, THE TWO MOST COMMON ARE EITHER AN FORMAL INDOOR PRESENTATION SET WITH POLE AND STAND OR A SMALLER FLAG FROM A WALL BRACKET, I.E. A CLASSROOM STYLE FLAG.
YES, IT IS COMMON TO SEE FLAGS IN GOVERNMENT OFFICES AND LOBBIES, CORPORATE AREAS, AUDITORIUMS ETC. MANY OF OUR CUSTOMERS LIKE TO FLY THE AMERICAN FLAG INDOORS AT HOME AS WELL.
Flag code specifically forbids advertising flags to be flown on the same pole as the American flag.
NO, BUT FOREIGN FLAGS SHOULD NEVER BE FLOWN BELOW THE US FLAG ON THE SAME POLE, BUT AT THE SAME HEIGHT ON ITS OWN POLE. THE AMERICAN FLAG SHOULD FLY IT THE STANDARD POSITION OF HONOR PER CODE, FARTHEST TO ITS OWN RIGHT FROM ALL OTHER FLAGS.
If the U.S. Flag is the only flag flying, it can be located anywhere. If there are multiple flags, the American Flag should always be positioned farthest to its own right (or if you are looking at the home from the curb, to the left side of the home).
YES, IT IS COMMON TO FLY A FLAG UNDERNEATH THE AMERICAN FLAG EXCEPT FOR FLAGS OF OTHER INTERNATIONAL BODIES OR ADVERTISING FLAGS. FLYING A FLAG OF OF ANOTHER NATION UNDERNEATH OR AT A LOWER HEIGHT THAN ANY OTHER NATION IS CONSIDERED DISRESPECTFUL.
Our best selling American Boat Flag Flag size is 12x18" and is generally recommended for boats up to 20'. For larger boats we offer a chart with size recommendations here: https://www.gettysburgflag.com/boat-flag-sizing
THE GENERALLY ACCEPTED LOCATION OF THE AMERICAN FLAG ON THE BOAT IS CENTERED ON THE STERN (REAR) OF THE VESSEL. IF THE CENTER IS NOT AVAILABLE, THE STARBOARD SIDE OF THE STERN IS PREFERABLE. SEPARATE LOCATIONS ARE SPECIFIC TO SAILBOATS DEPENDING ON RIGGING AVAILABLE.
VESSELS SHOULD FLY THEIR NATIONAL ENSIGN IN INTERNATIONAL WATERS BUT NON-COMMERCIAL VESSELS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO FLY AN ENSIGN WHEN PILOTED ON DOMESTIC INLAND OR AMERICAN COASTAL AREAS. WE RECOMMEND FLYING THE US FLAG ON ALL BOATS BECAUSE IT LOOKS GREAT AND FLIES PROUDLY.
Flag code stipulates that the U.S. Flag should be lit and recognizable as the American Flag at nighttime. If sufficient light is not available, the flag should be lowered at dusk and raised again at dawn.
Taking your flag down in inclement weather will help extend the lifespan of the flag but all weather material is meant to withstand repeated wet/dry cycles. As long as other protocols are followed, the U.S. Flag can be flown in all types of weather.
The Gettysburg Flag Works website offers specific recommendations on what size flag to fly depending on what size pole you have.
Flags are measured on the hoist (pole side measurement) and the fly (extension away from the pole). For instance, a 3x5' flag means that the flag closest to the pole measures 3' tall and would extend out 5' away from the pole at its farthest point.
The longest lasting common flag material is a 2-ply heavy duty polyester material. It holds up longer in severe wind conditions but is prone to fading more quickly than nylon material.
The American Flag itself did not have an official symbolism assigned to its color scheme by its creators. It would make sense that the founders borrowed the same or similar color scheme from the Union Jack flag of England and its territories. In a separate explanation of the colors of the Great Seal of the United States from the same time period, the colors are explained on the congressional record: "White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valour, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice."
HISTORICALLY US FLAGS HAVE BEEN MADE OF WOOL, COTTON AND EVEN HEMP CANVAS. MOST MODERN FLAGS ARE MADE FROM EITHER NYLON OR 2 PLY POLYESTER FABRIC. THE SYNTHETIC MATERIALS GENERALLY OFFER SUPERIOR LIFESPAN TO THE ORGANIC FABRICS OF YESTERYEAR.
GENERALLY SPEAKING A NEW, HIGH QUALITY GETTYSBURG FLAG WORKS FLAG WILL LAST ANYWHERE FROM 6 MONTHS TO 2 YEARS OF CONSISTENT FLYING. LIFESPANS VARY BASED ON LOCATION (LESS LIFESPAN IN VERY SUNNY AND VERY WINDY LOCATIONS), WEATHER EVENTS, HOW OFTEN THE FLAG IS FLOWN AND THE TYPE OF FLAG MATERIAL.
The letters stand for Fraternity, Charity & Loyalty - the motto of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Weather and location both take a toll on flags; sometimes a flag will last years, only to have a windstorm come along and tear it overnight. Some locations, especially near the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico, are absolutely brutal on flag lifespan, due to the extreme coastal wind and sun exposure - a double whammy! Nylon is a great choice for most people, as the colors are bright and the flag is lightweight in the breeze and dries quickly when it gets wet. However, in some spots, nylon just isn’t strong enough. We recommend a heavy duty 2 ply polyester material for these areas. The material is more canvas-like in appearance. Its heavier and while the colors are nice, they aren’t as bright as nylon. The value with this flag is that is much better than nylon against tearing. They all tear eventually, but if nylon is getting you 6 months, the heavy duty polyester may get you 9-12 months in similar circumstances.
You’re friend is technically correct, although most people would probably think the same way you did. The Betsy Ross flag is the first image of the US flag and in the folklore of the history of our Nations founding, its always discussed as the first American Flag. However, the 13 star in a circle design that is known as the Betsy Ross flag was never recognized as an official flag of the US legally. The first 13 star design that we used at inception was a different looking star arrangement, with the stars shown in rows.
When displayed within the U.S., the American flag must never be smaller than another flag, must never be lower than another flag and must maintain the correct positioning when flown next to other flags. International flags should never be flown beneath the flag of another country on the same pole, as it is interpreted as disrespectful to have another country above. The proper display will vary depending on what set up you have. We can always help and walk you thru your specific scenario thru email or a phone call.
The best way to handle house mounted flagpoles at half staff is actually to add a mourning streamer to the end of the pole to signify observance of half staff. The American Legion and US flag code both stipulate this as a preferred method to show respect during half-staff events.
Our solution to this very common problem is our non-tangle spinning pole. The pole is made of two pieces that screw together, with the top portion of the pole spinning independently on ball bearings so that when the wind blows, the flag blows with it and instead of wrapping around the pole, the flag flips over the pole and back into place. This option generally works great as long as the flag is not catching on anything when the wind blows.
Most outdoor flags will last longer if frequently washed with a mild detergent or dry cleaned. Dirt from roads, salt from the ocean and air pollutants can all shorten your flags life. You can't do anything to stop it, but by cleaning your flag, you can slow down the wear and keep it looking nicer, longer. Always lay flat or hang dry your wet American Flag . It will keep colors from migrating. Many dry cleaners will clean an American flag free of charge when you bring it in with your other items to clean!
Flag etiquette on Memorial Day is unique. At sunrise, flags are to be raised to full-staff briskly, then lowered to half staff position where they will remain until noon. At noon, flags are to be raised to full-staff and will be displayed there for the remainder of the holiday.
Hi Brad: Please give us a call and we can help you out. You can also send a note with a photo of the flag to us. Thank you!
The flags featuring green stripes are used to show support of Federal Agents such as Border Patrol, Park Rangers, and military personnel.
Hi Billy! I don't believe we carry the flag you are looking for, but if you could provide us with a picture of the flag you're referring to we'd be happy to double check. Feel free to contact us here: https://www.gettysburgflag.com/contact-gettysburg-flag
Hi Meredith-our apologies for the delay in our response. We were in fact closed on Memorial Day.
You can try your local VFW or American Legion Post, as many offer flag retirement services. You can also always bring or send them to Gettysburg Flag in East Greenbush NY for retirement at no cost.
