I enjoyed the meal; it was simple but good, and it reminded me of home. However, if there were more Mexican restaurants in Merced, this would perhaps be a 3 star review because in my experience with Mexican restaurants, J & R would be pretty average. I do wish there were better representatives of Mexican cuisine in the US, but I understand that it is hard to operate these types of businesses. On the other hand, Merced is positioned perfectly to host multiple farm-to-table style restaurants and the market has simply not been tapped into. Service was friendly, but the restaurant does look old.

It's way beyond a upscale Taco Bell. Not even on the same level.
There are parking lots less than a block away. Get on 99 highway drive north and get off on R street exit. Turn right on R street, two (?) blocks turn left on main street. J and R will be on the right side. Maybe two blocks.....
