Purchased a Townie e-bike here for a surprise gift for my wife and told the staff that there would be some chance she wouldn’t like it and might want to return it. They said no problem, just don’t ride it if that’s the case. Wife didn’t like it it (I’m like zero for 100 on gifts for her, she’s particular) and wanted something else. Brought it back and they said no refunds, much to my surprise. It’s a clear policy, their staff is very well trained to make sure they let people know of the policy (and it’s also documented at the register in 8 point font), so I must have mis understood. Talked to the owner, explained the situation, said he’d get back and never did (to be fair he was navigating some family stuff at the time). I was very clear at the time of purchase of my potential to return and at no time was their no refund policy made explicit. I understand thin margins of an LBS and the need for the policy in general, but had they made the policy clear, I probably wouldn’t have purchased given my circumstances. Super frustrating given I had set expectations upfront, a clear opportunity to emphasize the policy. Hopefully a one off experience, but won’t be going back nor bringing any of my 6 other bikes to their shop for service.
