ABYSSMAL. Where to start... My parents had pre-bought a double plot and funeral service over 15` years ago. My dad passed about 14 years ago; my mom just recently. When I called to have her remains picked up, they said they didn't have any record of her, and my dad was the only one they had arrangements for. (He is buried in a double plot with a double headstone). Luckily we had the original paperwork/contracts that clearly stated that both of my parents were included. In the numerous phone calls that took place, several things happened in EVERY case - the receptionist, who spoke little English continually asked me to repeat my name, my mother's name, and just about every other detail. NUMEROUS times per call. The other constant was, that the funeral director was always too busy to speak to me, and would have to call back. They NEVER did. That also went for calls placed by my mom's assisted living director, the minister who was to perform the service... NO CALLS WERE EVER RETURNED. If you've never had to go through the loss of a parent I will tell you, there are a thousand details, and the funeral director is supposed to guide and advise at every step of the way. While you're grieving is no time to make such decisions without advice of an expert. Next - we were advised that the chapel had no sound system for music or even the eulogy. and no podium/lectern for the minister or kneeler in front of the casket! This is unheard of, in my experience and that of everyone else I've spoken to. We had to provide the sound system ourselves. On the day of the viewing/interment, we arrived early, and it was a good thing. AGAIN, the receptionist asked our names, and my mom's SEVERAL times (there were only two funerals on that day, so it's not like there were many choices). When we got into the chapel, I noticed that they had not put my mom's jewelry on her (which I had provided several days before). There was still no podium for the minister or kneeler. My boyfriend went up to the front desk (where he AGAIN had to repeat all of our names two or three times for the box of rocks receptionist). He finally got the limo driver to explain the problems, and he assured him that he'd get the funeral director. Ten or 15 minutes passed - nothing. Finally my boyfriend demanded (in a very loud and strong tone) that someone had better come talk to him IMMEDIATELY... not in 5 minutes. Not in 10 minutes, but immediately. He did this in his limited Spanish as well as English. Finally a funeral director came and was told about the problems, which, to his credit, he resolved quickly. After that, things went along more smoothly, but the entire ordeal was made so much more stressful and difficult than it should have been. My B/F said that compared to how incredibly painless his mom's funeral director (up in Boca Raton) made her service/interment, this was the funeral from hell. Horrible experience all around.
