Very pretty trail to Cascade Falls, not too crowded on a Monday afternoon. The falls were very much a trickle in early August.

Many options, can reach waterfall less than 1 mile; also can extend day your trip to 20 + miles.

A short hike to the falls but don't expect to be able to go into the water.

You need a permit any time you will be in the desolation wilderness, whether overnight or day hiking. Day hikers can get theirs at the trailhead for free, but if staying overnight in the wilderness area, you must purchase the permit before arriving at the trailhead. Some changes may have been made this last season.
According to the Alltrails app, it isn't unanimous. Out of 8 routes that all start at the Bayview trailhead, the info on 6 of them say dogs are okay on leash, 1 says no dogs, and 1 doesn't say either way. While a different info page for the desolation wilderness states that you can have dogs just under voice control so long as they aren't bothering wildlife or other hikers. Personally I'd use the leash!
You don't need one, unless you plan to continue on to and camp in the wilderness area. If you park in the day use area and leave before sunset, it's free.
From what I understand, I need a desolation wildness permit to camp there.
Road is usually closed from November to January
