I haven't been here in a while because I bought so much yarn the last time I was here, but I absolutely support them being staunch about mask wearing even if other people think it's draconian or whatever. A mask under your nose doesn't help anybody. This space is like a large walk-in closet with no windows; proper mask wearing is probably their only bet for keeping their staff and patrons safe. Last time I was here I bought some fantastic metallic yarn. They usually have lots of interesting samples knit up for inspiration. The tool stock isn't huge so you might want to call ahead if you're looking for a particular needle or notion (but tbh I don't think any Manhattan stores keep a lot of stock in that realm). The yarn selection is amazing for the size of the store.

Nice place. Ok selection of yarn, used to far larger selections elsewhere especially the hand dyed variety, lots was name brand yarns and I prefer the local and independent obes. Very small shop. They are VERY insistent on not only masks but hand sanitizer at door before will let you in, and that is fine but... My son's mask slipped a bit and they yelled across the store to put it back up before I could even say anything to him. He was watching my phone and sitting quietly in a corner. Not your job to say anything to my child, and frankly it was rude the tone you had. You should have said something to me and I would have taken care of it. Your job is sell yarn. Nothing else.

Downtown Yarns has an amazing selection and incredibly helpful staff! I came in with a photo of what I was looking to make and they helped me pick out a gorgeous yarn that I am so excited to work with. They’ll even ball the yarn for you, free of charge! I’d recommend Downtown Yarns for anyone looking for high quality yarns and/or may need advice on starting their next project!

I was looking for a yarn shop with locally made or died yarn. Was so happy to find this one with the sweetest most helpful customer service and beautiful hand died yarn. Definitely would recommend!

Do you carry embroidery thread / floss? Or can your yarn be split into individual threads for embroidery? (I don't really understand the difference between embroidery thread and knitting yarn / if there is one)

You'd have to call and ask if they carry embroidery floss I don't believe they do. Embroidery floss is thin and spun to be that size. Knitting yarn is spun to be its own size and has different textures. The michaels on 6th Ave or the Blick on 6th Ave have good selections of embroidery flss though.
