Opening day for 2018 is May 5th. You are still able to access the grounds year-round, the fountain itself just isn't running right now.

It was donated in 1927 by Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother. Represents Lake Michigan. It has 4 seahorses representing 4 states Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. It is the entrance to the city...that is, the courtyard of Chicago.

Contrary to the other comments, Buckingham Fountain should be closed as Lollapalooza is happening from 7/28-7/31 and the areas are gated.

I know you can always see the fountain but they turn the water off in the mid to late fall and turn it back on sometime in the spring. They don't want frozen water to damage the fountain.

I've never seen it "dance" but the water shoots up the highest at the top of each hour.
