This area provided critical habitat for endangered plants, pollinators, and native flora and fauna. The fire roads are sandy and can be difficult to walk on or too wet to traverse. I saw Pitcher plants and lots of Pine trees. Wetlands help mitigate climate change and erosion and filter contaminated runoff water. It would be nice to see this area expanded.

Fantastic piece of well maintained, but natural land. Don't come here if you're expecting a manicured city park, this area is dedicated for wildlife.

This is like taking a trip to Jurassic Park the forest is immense and the animal life is unreal.

Questions & Answers

Are there walking trails and can I walk my dog. Is there a fee?

I believe it's a Wildlife Management Area and in Virginia dogs are not allowed in areas like this. I also saw no established Trails, miles and miles of sandy roads and unique habitat. I only visited the place once.

I've found several species of drosera and sarricenna wven untricularia have yet to find flytraps whens the best time to find them? And are the more along the fire breaks or off the paths

Look closely at the ground to find venus fly traps. They're frequently just under pine straw or mixed in with sphagnum moss. The broad, bright green leaf base catches my eye more that the trapping mechanism. They like the lower edges of slight topography like Carolina Bay sand rims and forestry furrows. They're often associated with sarracenia purpurea. If you see that, look for fly traps in the same areas. They need sunlight to flourish, recently burned areas are a good place to start. When you find a colony, please don't publish the exact location. Poaching has been a longstanding problem.
