The Marine Fisheries Biologists do research with them
They have a flat waterproof tape measure they use to determine the length of the fish. They can determine the weight within a range They have set by the precious fish caught. Example is a Marlin that is 115 inches long most times will weigh over 500lbs depending on the girth of the fish. But not always.
