Following a suggestion from a friend, I swing by Free Cycles Missoula while helping a young rider shop for a bike. We weren’t set on buying anything at all, just interested to look around and I had heard the build-a-bike program was a good way to learn about bikes and a great deal for a refurbished rig. The whole mission was a complete success! Build a bike is great: volunteer 90 minutes to the yard, roll up your sleeves, and go bananas building your bike. I’m so excited to get started! As for shopping with the young rider, Yan made the introduction to the cycle selection very easy. He gave an accessible and friendly summary of the different styles of bikes and what kind of riding they would be good for, a quick tour of where to find things, and then gave us plenty of room to shop and test ride without pressure or obligation. We rode a bunch of different bikes and had a great day figuring out the right fit and style. After shopping around town a bit more, we ultimately decided the refurbished Gary Fisher Tiburon was a perfect fit and at such a reasonable price there was really no question about it. Michaela helped us out during the second visit and after the final test ride gave our young rider a run down of Missoula bike laws with some really helpful tips for navigating safely around town. Before checking out, we noticed an imperfection on one of the tires and suddenly we got a hands-on tire and tube changing lesson! I was so excited to see how much fun my budding biker had while learning this essential skill. We’ll definitely be back for more maintenance lessons and bike building. Thank you Free Cycles for this great experience you bring to the Missoula community!!

The most compassionate and highest level of creativity found at any bike shop I’ve ever been to. Many knowledgeable bike mechanics here to help you with your bicycle. Volunteer opportunities.

Unfortunately we do not do any motor conversions. But we can make sure the cycle is tunes before hand. Plus its free.
Building the bike is done on site. The volunteers are very helpful, and will assist in selecting a good bike to start with (most are not "turnkey"). After you pick your bike, you then piece it together using parts from their extensive yard. The volunteers help, and you can then ride away a tuned and road-ready bike for less than a dinner out for two! Highly recommended!
Digitup ok I hope they have 27.5 by 2.5 cause my tube is screwed a patch won't fix that lol
